Recipe notes
Weigh the extract rather than scooping it, since a 1 g serve is small and easy to misjudge.
Whisking the extract into the milk first stops it sticking to the blender jug or forming dry pockets.
Thickness comes from frozen fruit and very little liquid, so add milk slowly.
For a vegan bowl, use coconut yoghurt and oat or almond milk.
This recipe uses extract powder, not fresh or raw mushrooms, so there is no mushroom texture. For more ideas, see these tips on how to use Lion's Mane extract powder.
Eat it straight away, as it melts quickly. This is a food recipe, not a health product.
Pairing
Serve with a warm drink such as a Lion's Mane latte, keeping to 1 g of extract per serve for each.
A boiled egg or a slice of wholegrain toast on the side makes it a fuller breakfast.

FAQs
1. What is a mushroom smoothie?
A mushroom smoothie is a regular fruit smoothie with a functional mushroom added, usually as a powder or extract rather than fresh mushrooms. This bowl uses 1 g of Lion's Mane extract powder blended with frozen banana, berries and yoghurt. The fruit carries the flavour, so it tastes like a berry smoothie with a faint earthy note.
2. How much Lion's Mane extract goes in a smoothie?
This recipe uses 1 g of Lion's Mane extract powder per bowl, the label serve for our 10:1 fruiting body extract. Weigh it on a digital scale for accuracy. If you are making two bowls, blend a double batch of fruit but keep the extract at 1 g per person.
3. Can I taste the mushroom?
Barely. Lion's Mane extract has a mild, slightly savoury flavour, and frozen banana and berries easily cover it. Most people only notice a subtle earthy depth at the end. If you are new to it, a teaspoon of honey or a few extra berries will mask it completely.
4. Can I use raw Lion's Mane mushroom instead?
This recipe is written for extract powder, not raw mushroom. Fresh Lion's Mane is usually cooked before eating and would change the texture of a smoothie. Our extract is made from 100% fruiting body, freeze-dried and processed into a 10:1 extract, so it blends straight in.
5. Can I make it ahead?
Smoothie bowls are best eaten straight away, since they soften within about 10 minutes. To save time, portion the frozen fruit into a container or bag the night before. In the morning, whisk the 1 g of extract into the milk and blend everything together in a couple of minutes.
