Recipe notes

Weighing is the most reliable way to measure a 1 g serve, since spoon measures vary.

Making a paste with a little warm milk first stops the spices and extract clumping.

Oat or soy milk froth well and give a creamy plant based version.

For an iced golden milk, whisk the paste with 2 tbsp hot water, then add cold milk and ice.

Turmeric stains, so rinse your whisk and mug soon after use.

This is a food recipe, not a health product. Lion's Mane has been traditionally used in East Asian cooking.

Pairing

Serve with a slice of carrot cake or an oat biscuit.

On cooler evenings it sits well beside a small handful of dates or toasted almonds.

FAQs

1. What is Lion's Mane golden milk?

Lion's Mane golden milk is a turmeric latte with 1 g of Lion's Mane extract powder whisked in. Warm milk is blended with turmeric, cinnamon, ginger and a pinch of black pepper, then the extract is added as a paste. The result is a smooth, gently spiced drink with a soft, earthy background from the mushroom extract.

2. How much Lion's Mane goes in golden milk?

This recipe uses 1 g of Lion's Mane extract powder per mug, which is the label serve for our 10:1 fruiting body extract. Use a digital scale with 0.1 g accuracy rather than a teaspoon, because spoon measures vary between powders. One serve is enough to add an earthy depth without overpowering the spices.

3. Does Lion's Mane golden milk contain caffeine?

No. Lion's Mane contains no caffeine, and this golden milk has no coffee, tea, matcha or cacao, so the drink is caffeine free as written. If you would like a caffeinated version, add a shot of espresso, which turns it into a spiced latte. That makes it a flexible drink for either mornings or evenings.

4. Can I make it with plant milk?

Yes. Oat, soy and almond milk all work well in this recipe. Oat milk gives the creamiest texture and froths easily, soy holds foam best, and almond is lighter and slightly nutty. Barista style plant milks heat more evenly. Keep the milk at around 60°C to 65°C so it stays smooth and does not split.

5. Why add black pepper to golden milk?

Black pepper is a traditional part of golden milk recipes and adds a gentle warmth that balances the earthy turmeric and Lion's Mane. A very small pinch is enough; you should barely taste it. If you prefer a sweeter, milder drink, you can leave it out without changing the method or the rest of the recipe.
